Workcamps and learning camps are the most common form of short-term opportunities that SEEDS offers, in which a group of participants live together and work on a specific project. Camps generally last from 9 to 16 days.

The projects we develop tend to focus on one or more of the following goals:

  • Cultural and intercultural exchange and education
  • Education and awareness of current environmental issues
  • Education and development of artistic skills (such as basic photography skills)
  • Nature preservation and reforestation

The summer projects mainly consist of outdoor camps that take place in Reykjavík or around the country in partnership with local organisations or municipalities. The work carried out in these camps encompasses outdoor volunteer work that raises environmental awareness through intercultural cooperation such as:

  • Restoring hiking trails in nature parks for public use
  • Planting trees in green areas
  • Restoring cultural heritage damaged by the weather and natural disasters
  • Carrying out coastal and beach clean-ups
  • Helping with maintenance of the Botanical Gardens in Reykjavík
  • Construction or renovation of community buildings, monuments or community centres
  • Ecological research
  • Removing invasive growth amongst others

The winter camps, usually called “Environment and Photography” mostly take place in the capital city. During these camps, our short- and long-term volunteers carry out non-formal educational activities to raise awareness of environmental, cultural and artistic topics of their interest. They usually carry out workshops, beach and downtown cleanups in cooperation with the Icelandic Ministry for the Environment, Blue Army as well as carry out night photography and northern lights workshops amongst other activities.

International camps bring together volunteers from different nationalities and backgrounds with the aim of building global understanding and therefore encouraging peace while working for an identified need of the local community. Group sizes vary from 6-30 participants.
