Region: Capital Region

WORK/PROJECT: This particular project will combine different tasks such as renovating a courtyard from the Twenties as well as creating an environmentally-friendly coffee shop within a highly-regarded historical building that was formerly a dairy and is now an artist’s atelier. This will ensure diverse daily tasks and various experiences at the same time for SEEDS volunteers.

SEEDS volunteers will be working on both environmental and architectural oriented tasks within this project. Most of the materials used for the renovation have been reclaimed from Sorpa (the local recycling company) as well as from private individuals.

The project will involve some creative design skills from the volunteers, as at least two of the spaces are ‘blank canvasses’ and will need some artistic input.

While we help to preserve the local environment, we will explore the surroundings of the location and enjoy free time activities arranged in cooperation with the local host.

Volunteers also will have the opportunity to work two days with the city of Reykjavík in the cemeteries. Volunteers will help with raking leaves, beautifying graves that are not well kept, work on the recycling system among other tasks.

ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will stay at a local house/school; volunteers will sleep on mattresses on the floor and need to bring a sleeping bag. Volunteers will be provided with food and be in charge of the cooking themselves.

Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your home country for an international evening.

LOCATION: Reykjavík: is the capital of Iceland, often called “the nightlife capital of the north”. But there is more to Reykjavík than pubs and clubs. Reykjavík also gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture. It is an incubator of new ideas and styles which often indicates new global trends. It is an International city with a lively Cosmopolitan cultural scene.

The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides.

The population of the city is over 200,000 including the metropolitan area, so two thirds of Iceland’s inhabitants live here. Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal power and glacial rivers.

In the area closer than 100 Km from Reykjavík, there are several spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline and the well-known geothermal Blue Lagoon spa to visit.

LANGUAGE: English will be the language in the camp; basic conversational skills are needed.

TERMINAL: Closest international Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík(KEF). Bus station:Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).

SEEDS organises the “minibus option”, a shared transport from Reykjavík to the camps and vice-versa, which apart from being cheaper and more convenient, allows volunteers to meet fellow campers and have a relaxed trip, while stopping on the way for interesting and tourist sites.

EXTRAS / SPECIAL REMARKS: Participation fee EUR 160 (Euros).

Please note that the fees are to be paid to SEEDS on arrival in either Euros or Icelandic crowns.

Volunteers should have a motivation for working outdoors, and need to be flexible and motivated to work in all the diverse tasks connected with the project.

Tours and excursions (Golden Circle, South Shore) will be arranged for SEEDS volunteers at discount fares. Please bring warm clothes, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats as part of the project/trips takes place outside and the weather can be cold or rainy.
