Today is World Cleanup Day 2024
On this special day, millions of volunteers across the globe unite to tackle the waste problem, one piece of trash at a time. From beautiful beaches and lush forests to busy city streets, people of all ages are coming together to clean our planet and raise awareness for a cleaner, greener future.
At SEEDS, we’re proud to organize regular cleanups during our camps, where volunteers from diverse backgrounds join forces to restore Icelandic landscapes. From the enchanting woods of Perlan to the stunning black sand beaches, we go where the trash is and leave these magical places better than we found them! This year we already organized more than 30 cleanups, with almost 2 tons of trash collected! A big thank you to all our volunteer who helped.
Did you know that World Cleanup Day began in Estonia in 2008, when 50,000 people came together to clean up the entire country in just one day? Since then, it has blossomed into a worldwide movement, inspiring millions in 190 countries to combat waste pollution. In a historic moment, the United Nations officially recognized this initiative on 8 December 2023, proclaiming September 20th as a global day of action against waste!
This incredible effort reminds us that small actions can spark global change—let’s keep the momentum going! Join us tomorrow for our cleanup in Sandgerði at 10 AM, as we celebrate this wonderful day together with Blái herinn.
Together, we can build a cleaner, waste-free planet!
